Get ready to paddle! The annual Charles Hicks challenge is planned to be back on Sunday 9th Novembers. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a complete beginner, we want you to be a part of it.
Take on the Challenge
Mark your calendars! Back by popular demand, the 2024 Charles Hicks Challenge is happening [subject to water levels]. This is your chance to test your skills for the Devizes to Westminster race to families and friends who just want a fun day out on the water.
-
Paddlers of All Levels: Whether you're in a canoe or a kayak, a single or a double, and no matter your age—juniors, seniors, and veterans are all welcome. Schools are also highly encouraged to form a team and join in on the fun.
-
Lots of Portage [subject to conditions]: This course is famous for its portages, offering an excellent opportunity to practice your technique in a real race environment. It's an experience very similar to the Kennet and Avon section of the Devizes to Westminster race.
-
Start and finish in the same place: We've made it easy for you with a convenient start and finish point, so you won't have to worry about complicated logistics.
-
Great Food: Everyone knows a good race needs good food, and we've got you covered with delicious paddler's food at the finish line.
What You Need to Know
Important Note on Water Levels: Due to continued canal maintenance and the lack of rain this year, we are closely monitoring water levels. Please keep an eye out for a confirmation of the event in due course.
Who can participate? Open to all. We welcome single and double canoes and kayaks, as well as juniors, seniors, and veterans. Schools are especially encouraged to bring a team.
What if the event is cancelled? We offer a full refund if the event is cancelled for any reason, so you can register with confidence when registration goes live.
Route details: The route will be out to Fleet Wharf over Ash Lock and back. Then false portage at Mytchett. Then down to Kinds Head Bridge and back to the finish at the swing bridge at Mytchett. 2 turns + 3 portages, making the course 16.35 miles in total.
Grab your paddles, challenge your friends and family, and get ready for a fantastic day on the water.
