Venue
The start and the control point will be at the Tidal Barrage, Barmby on the Marsh, Near Howden East Yorkshire DN14 7HX. There is a picnic site and free car parking available at the Barrage, please be considerate of other users of this venue when parking. If you require designated parking for this event please contact the Event Organiser in advance. SatNav - make sure it takes you to the Howden side of the river NOT the Goole side. The River Derwent in generally slow flowing with meanders but wind may be an issue. There are no local shops in the vicinity. The nearst shops and petrol stations are in Howden. Do not put Wolfreton in your SatNav or you will end up in Norfolk!
The Event
The event will consist of a divisional Hasler Marathon and Geoff Sanders Trophy
The event will be run in accordance with the BC Marathon Committee Rules
Distances
Division 1-3 singles and 2 and 3 doubles - 12 miles
Division 4-6 singles and doubles - 8 miles
Division 7-9 singles and doubles - 4 miles
Geoff Sanders Trophy A, B and C (Age under 14 1st January 2022) - 2 miles
There will be no portages
All paddlers in Divisions 9 and above should wear their club colours to qualify for Hasler points. A plain coloured T-shirt in club colours is also acceptable.
Entry fees
£8.00 18 years and over per seat
£5.00 Under 18's in Hasler divisions per seat
£3.00 in Geoff Sanders Trophy races per seat
All entrants must have full British Canoeing membership for Divisions 1-6 or, at least, BC Associate Club membership for Divisions 7-9. Otherwise an additional BC Event Fee of £5.00 with be charged in accordance with rule 12b.
Please enter by the British Canoeing Race Entry System https//entries.gbcanoemarathon.co.uk/entries by Saturday 18 June 2023. Limited on the day entries will be accepted.
Direct payment is not possible online via MRC Registration so please check out without paying. Team leaders please pay on the day in cash or cheques made payable to Kingston Kayak Club. Online banking details will be available on the day.
Where a paddler has a pre-existing condition, medical or otherwise, which requires reasonable adjustments to be made in accordance with the Equality Act 2010, the paddler is required to submit their requirement(s) in writing to the Event Organiser prior to the event commencing. Following receipt of this information the Event Organiser(s) will consider in conjuction with the venue management and British Canoeing whether reasonable adjustments suited to the paddler can be implemented at the event. For the avoidance of doubt, every reasonable effort will be made to accommodate pre-existing medical conditions and remove any disadvantage faced by disabled people.
Check in time
10.00am to 11.30am with Race Briefing at 11:45am
Race Start Time
Order: 12 mile; 8 mile; 4 mile and Geoff Sanders Trophy.
The start time for the first division will be 12 noon and the start order will be explained at the race briefing. Be aware that there may not be some paddlers in the higher divisions, therefore pleae be preparted to start your race from midday.
Numbers on Boats
All paddlers should display their number clearly on their boat. These should be black letters on white upright boards as specified in the BC Marathon Committee rules.
Buoyancy Aids (BA)
Personal flotation devices must be worn by all paddlers in Divisions 7-9 and the Geoff Sanders Trophy races. For juniors racing in the higher divisions, the use of buoyancy aids will be at their team manager's discretion. The Race Organiser on behalf of Kingston Kayak Club reserves the right to insist that all competitiors wear buoyancy aids in the case of adverse water or weather conditions. The Race Organiser on behalf of Kingston Kayak Club further reserves the right to cancel all or part of the event before or on the day if weather and water conditions are deemed adverse to safe competition.
Access to the water
Access is via a floating pontoon. This has a metal surface so please wear adequate foot wear. Assemble upstream of the pontoon. DO NOT go downstream beyond the pontoon as there is a barrage with a lock and with a flood gate where there may be danger from strong currents in their vicinity. Note: Spectators are not allowed on the pontoon unless to help juniors or paddlers with mobility difficulties and are expected to wear a BA.
Course and Turns
All courses will be upstream - out and back. All turns will be anti-clockwise and controlled by a Marshall with a flag. Course routes will be on a map at control. Dependant on conditions on the day it may be necessary to loop courses.
Finishing
Paddlers should cross the line in their kayak/canoe.
Rules of the River
Other craft may be using the waterway. Paddlers will need to be able to cope with the wash and bow waves from these boats. Please paddle on the right hand side of the waterway, and be courteous to other water users, fishermen etc.
Safety
"Canoeing and kayaking are 'assumed risk' - 'water contact sports' that may carry attendant risks. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks, and be reposnsible for their own action and involvement" British Canoeing statement.
Paddlers of all ages are very welcome to take part in this event, however individual clubs should ensure that their paddlers are appropriately equipped, and suitably experienced to participate in the race. If it is deemed necessary that an individual requires a support paddler, this should be provided by the individual's club wherever possible. If you see someone in diffficulty or who has capsized, please stop and offer them help and provide assistance if requested to do so.
Results
Times will be posted at the check-in point after the race has finished. Full results will be made available on the British Canoeing Marathon Results website.
Prizes
Prize giving will take place as soon as possible after the event when all the paddlers have finished the race. Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd in every division where there are sufficient comptetitors. All Geoff Sanders competitors will receive a certificate.
Toilet facilities and Changing rooms
These are located adjacent to the car park, including disabled toilets. Please leave toilets as you find them. There are no permanent changing rooms on site but a tent will be provided.
Litter
Please ensure that all litter is placed in the relevant bins or taken home for recycling.
